Lemon Demon - Damn Skippy

[Genre - Geek Rock] [10/10]

Neil Cicierega's music is always filled to the brim with fun whenever I listen to it. While I do enjoy the New Wave direction of his newer songs (such as his album Spirit Phone), I can't help but always find myself drifting back to his older, more cheerful music - its informal, upbeat and eccentric instrumentals paired with lyrics on absurdly specific topics makes for an extremely enjoyable time listening to it. The songs he makes, especially for Damn Skippy, are consistently tremendously catchy, and there's no struggle hearing the bright, chirpy tunes and highly memorable lyrics. It's also sorely unrecognized when it comes to most Lemon Demon fans, so I hope this review will help others get into more of his older music. :-)

[Favorite Song - Geeks in Love]

Let me get a bit personal for a moment - I have an extreme bias when it comes to this song. Every time I think about this song or listen to it (which is frequent!), I think about my wonderful partner, and just cannot stop myself from smiling like a massive dork. We're both pretty big nerds and SUPER big into fandom stuff, and while the specific references are lost on someone that wasn't in the same circles as Neil, it's still a very comforting listen since it reminds me of my favorite person in the whole world, and it's such a happy song as well. (love you N! <3)
All that being said, Geeks in Love is still a very fun song about love, one of the very few that Neil writes, comparative to most artists. Its exploration of "atypical" love has its places in "geek" circles, but also finds a home in the queer community as a celebration of love that others might look down on. Really, it can be compared to just about any minority group that has difficulty finding and accepting love in their lives, whether it be romantic or platonic or worldly - but this song is very hopeful in that manner. It gives hope that despite others putting you down, you can always find love in those that you care about, and despite its evident focus on romantic love, it easily resonates in any aspect of life that love is present in. I've seen some express that they see this song as "ironic", and I really can't see that view at all - this song, to me, gives out nothing but love.

[Least Favorite Song - Gonna Dig Up Alec Guinness]

Really, I have no strong feelings for or against this song. The simple fact is I just don't listen to it very much. It's definitely a good song and doesn't particularly stand out negatively amongst his works, don't get me wrong, but the other songs have more connection to me that usually lead me to listen to them instead. I'm going to be honest, I forgot this song existed before I relistened to the album for this review... But that's that. I wouldn't say it should be skipped at all! Just isn't my thing.
