Dream Puzzles - 3D Virtual Buddies

[Genre - Indie Electronic Pop] [8/10]

Dream Puzzles' debut album is nothing but fun times from start to end. Their music contains incredible constructions of dreamlike environments with their upbeat and crunchy-sounding synthwork, as well as a distinct dichotomy of childhood artifacts and matured experiences via their incredible lyricism. Both components combine in 3D Virtual Buddies to create a style of music unlike any other, of honesty to the self that still loves our Aquapets and PS2 disks of Finkle's World, but feels the pain and traumas of the world as they move further away from it.

[Favorite Song - Captain Midnight]

This song, I feel, encompasses the energy of 3D Virtual Buddies wonderfully. Its imagery of longing is very strong, exaggerated by the phrasing of the subject - "Captain Midnight". It creates an imagery of starry skies and broad seas, dispersed by radio and television signals... I feel the intro sample introducing the listener to this entity as a mysterious hijacker really adds a lot to the song as well, even though I'm not exactly ecstatic for most of the samples in the songs.

[Least Favorite Song - Virtual Pet (Skit) ]

I get that this wasn't supposed to exactly be a "song", but since it's on the BandCamp album I'm reviewing it as one anyway - this song really disturbs me. The way in which the voice is mixed and spoken just drives me straight into the Uncanny Valley, and even before the abrupt ending it unsettled me greatly. The spacing between the parts of the song is also offputting? I don't know if I'm just being a hater but I really can't listen to this song. Maybe that was the point, but that's just my opinion.
